Terminalia chebula Retz.
Tree, with a blackish bark, 15-20 m tall, of the dense decideous forests of Southern China, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indochinese Peninsula and Malaysia. The bitter green fruits are eaten raw with roasted fish. Wood much in demand in cabinetwork and in construction. The bark produces a gum and tannins used to dye fishing nets.

Arbre, à écorce noirâtre, haut de 15-20 m, des forêts denses décidues de la Chine du Sud, de l’Inde, du Népal, de Sri Lanka, de la péninsule indochinoise et en Malaisie. Les fruits verts d’un goût amer, sont consommés crus avec du poisson grillé. Bois très recherché en ébénisterie et en construction. L’écorce produit une gomme et des tannins employés pour teindre les filets de pêche.
