Strychnos nux-vomica L.

Tree, 5-20 m tall, of the clear forests or edges of dense forests, at riversides on clay of sandy-clay soil in India, Sri Lanka, Indochinese and Malay Peninsula, introduced in the Philippines. The seeds are used as emetic at the dose of one; twofold it would often be fatal. The barks, in external use, are used in the bandage of the ulcers. Seeds exported to Europe for pharmaceutical use because of their high strychnine content. In suitable dose, it is a tonic of the nerve cell and a stimulant of the nerve centres, which regulating action it increases.
