Tree, 15-25 m tall, of the wet dense forests of the of the Indochinese Peninsula. India and Malay Archipelago The ripe fruits are often sold on markets; the golden yellow arillus is used to acidulate some liquid dishes. especially spawns "sâmlâ". The seeds contain up to 70% oil, called " Macassar oil", which has the reputation of stimulating hair growth. The bark, in infusion or in maceration in the water, would be a remedy against the malaria and various inflammations. This tree is often the host of stick lac insects (Tachardia lacca).

Arbre, haut de 15-25 m, des forêts denses humides de la péninsule indochinoise, de l’Inde et de l’Archipel malais. Les fruits mûrs se trouvent souvent en vente sur les marches ; l’arille jaune d’or s’emploie comme condiment pour aciduler certains plats liquides, « sâmlâ » surtout à base d’œufs de poisson. Les graines contiennent jusqu’à 70% d’huile, appelée « huile de Macassar » réputée être un stimulant pour la croissance des cheveux. L’écorce, en infusion ou en macération dans l’eau, serait un remède contre le paludisme ou les inflammations diverses. Cet arbre est souvent l’hôte des insectes à stick lac (Tachardia lacca).
