HEVEA (Euphorbiaceae)
Hevea brasiliensis (Willd, ex A.L. Juss.) Müll. Arg,
Tree, 10-20 m tall, originating from the valley of the Amazon, introduced in Southeast Asia since late 19-th century. The hevea is especially cultivated for its latex which supplies the rubber, a well known raw material with a major importance in industry. In Cambodia, hevea cultivation, mainly in Kompong Cham province, provided, before 1970, 60.000 tons of rubber. In modern medicine, the latex is used for the manufacture of surgical devices, gloves, waterproof fabrics and bandage. The addition of a small quantity of latex to the anti-rabic vaccine improves its efficiency. The seeds give an oil used in dyeing and for the manufacture of soaps. The cakes constitute an excellent fodder for the cattle, if not given in large quantities, which may prove dangerous.

Arbre, haut de 10-20 m, originaire de la vallée de l’Amazone, introduit en Asie du Sud-Est dès la fin du 19ème siècle. L’Hévéa est surtout cultivé pour son latex qui fournit le caoutchouc, matière première bien connue d’une importance capitale du point de vue industriel. Au Cambodge, l’hévéa-culture, implantée principalement dans la province de Kompong Cham, fournit avant 1970, près de 60.000 tonnes de caoutchouc. Dans les usages médicinaux, le latex sert à la fabrication d’appareils chirurgicaux, de gants, de tissus imperméables, de pansement. L’addition d’une petite quantité de latex au vaccin antirabique augmente l’activité du vaccin. Les graines donnent une huile utilisée en peinture et pour la fabrication de savons. Les tourteaux constituent un excellent fourrage pour le bétail, à petite quantité car l’emploi en grande quantité peut être dangereux.
