Dimocarpus longan Lour.
Tree or shrub, 5-15 m tall, originating from India, cultivated in the whole Southeast Asia and in Australia for its very appreciated sweet juicy fruits. The edible part is arillus which wraps completely the spherical and single seed. The most valued horticultural variety is the "chu: hut" fitted with a thick arillus surrounding a very small seed. Longan tree is cultivated ialmost everywhere in Cambodian gardens. Freed from the kernel, arillus can be candied in sugar or dried. It has the reputation to be tonic, particularly on intellectual capacities. The dried flowers are used in traditional Chinese medicine. The eye of the seed, applied to snake bite, would have the property to absorb the poison.

Arbre ou arbuste, haut de 5-15 m, originaire de l’Inde, cultivé dans toute l’Asie du Sud-Est et en Australie pour ses fruits juteux sucrés, très appréciés. La partie comestible est l’arille qui enveloppe complètement la graine sphérique et solitaire. La variété horticole la plus estimée est celle dite « chu: hut’ » pourvue d’un arille abondant entourant une graine minuscule. Le longanier est cultivé dans presque tous les potagers cambodgiens. Débarrassé de son noyau, l’arille peut être confit dans du sucre ou séché. Il a la réputation d’être tonique et d’exciter les fonctions intellectuelles. Les fleurs séchées sont employées en pharmacopée chinoise. L’œil de la graine, appliqué sur la morsure d’un serpent, aurait la propriété d’en absorber le venin.
