451

.

Dialium cochinchinense Pierre

Tree, 15-25 m tall, of dense and clear forests of Indochina (Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand). The ripe fruits are edible, sold on the markets in rainy season. The bark, thick, red, often replaces areca nut in betel quid; it can also be used to make a brown dye for clothes and fishing nets. The wood is appreciated for pillars and joists of short length; mostly, it is used for the manufacture of pulleys, rice mills and carts; it is particularly used to make hubs, as transversal piece connecting the 2 hubs or as rail frame.
