CORCHORUS (Tiliaceae)

364

.

Corchorus capsularis L.

Annual herb, 1-3 m tall, introduced from China, widely cultivated in Asia. The young shoots are edible. In Cambodia, the species became subspontaneous. The fibers are used as textiles to make links and especially bags. In traditional medicine, the infusions of leaves would be tonic for the children; they are also considered to be efficient against cough. The bitter seeds, toxic for the cattle, contain cardiotonic heterosides. Decoction from the bark would be antifeverish.
