ANACARDIUM (Anacardiaceae)
Anacardium occidentale L.
The cashew-apple is a shrub, 2-8 m tall, native to tropical America, cultivated in tropics and intensively in India for its very appreciated oily nuts. One can found them on markets all over the world. In Cambodia the plant is rather cultivated as ornamental than as fruit-tree. The young leaves are eaten raw in salads, especially in time of shortage. The hypertrophic pedunculous wrongly known as the fruit, sweet or lightly acidic, is enough sought as a dainty that Cambodia people eat with salt. The bark gives a yellow stain. The timber is used for making boats, and house boards. It would make an excellent charcoal.

L’anacardier est un arbuste haut de 2-8 m. originaire de l’Amérique tropicale, cultivé partout sous les Tropiques, et d’une façon intensive en Inde, pour ses noix oléagineuses très appréciées. On peut trouver ces dernières sur tous les marchés du monde. Au Cambodge, on cultive l’anacardier plutôt comme plante ornementale que comme arbre fruitier : ses jeunes feuilles sont consommées crues en légumes, surtout en période de disette. Le pédoncule fructifère, hypertrophié, faussement nommé fruit, de saveur sucrée ou légèrement acidulée, est assez recherché comme friandise, que les Cambodgiens mangent avec du sel. L’écorce donne une teinture jaune. Le bois de l’anacardier est utilisé pour faire des bateaux, et des planches de maisons. Il donnerait du un excellent charbon de bois.
